Myofascial Pain Syndrome

A chronic pain condition that causes pain in the muscles characterized by trigger points. Can be caused by repetitive strain injuries, stress, injuries from falls, auto accidents, etc. Symptoms include deep aching pain in muscle, tender knot in muscle.

Trigger points are hyperirritable knots in the muscle very tender to the touch. The muscle knots are very tight which reduces the ability of oxygen to get into the muscle which perpetuates the chronic pain cycle.

I was fortunate to have attended a seminar by Janet Travell, MD who developed the concept of Myofascial pain syndrome and trigger points. I have been treating patients with Myofascial pain syndrome since.

In my experience I have found that the best chance to relieve the chronic pain from trigger points are trigger point injections which help to break up the muscle knot to improve the blood circulation to the muscle reducing the irritability and chronic pain cycle. Even better are trigger point injections with Prolozone which provides oxygen to the oxygen starved muscle once the muscle knot has been relaxed. Trigger point injections that do not break up the muscle knot are not therapeutic and in most cases the trigger point pain will persist.
